CALVER FILM CLUB

Posted on Tuesday, 01 September 2009 12:40PM by Bakewell local News
Big screen hits will be shown at a little Dales hall during a popular village film club's fifth season.

Calver Film Club has announced the nine films it will host during its 2009/10 season, which will open with The Duchess on September 10.

The film – starring Keira Knightley and partly filmed at Chatsworth House – tells the remarkable and sad story of the 17th Duchess of Devonshire, Georgiana Cavendish, and her addictions to sex, gambling and alcohol.

The October film is The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas, which tells the emotional World War Two story of the forbidden friendship between a Jewish boy and Nazi commandant's son.

Other films to be shown during the season, which runs until May, include La Vie En Rose, The Reader and Slumdog Millionaire.

Organiser Denise Hall said: "We are a membership club, based in the village hall and aim to show a mixture of new, classic and foreign language films.

"The village hall has a bar, which encourages the social side to our evenings and occasionally other social events are included."

She added: "We are delighted to announce our fifth season and hope to include some new exciting live entertainment as well as a bonus film, in addition to the published programme."

All films take place on the second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm at Calver Village Hall. Membership costs £20, which covers all nine films plus one bonus screening.

Members can bring a maximum of two guests – each paying £5 – to each film without having to book.

Money from the films will go towards Derbyshire charities, including Helen's Trust and Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport.
